WPSL PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Long Island’s Vicki DiMartino (L) & Ohio Premier’s Lauren Robertson (R) are named WPSL Co-Players of the Week

SACRAMENTO, CA (06/16/09) -
Midwest action picked up speed this past weekend in the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL), with the solid Ohio Premier Women’s S.C. (3-0-0 WPSL Midwest) side picking up two important road shut-out wins and pole position for the post-season. Meanwhile, the host organization of this season’s WPSL Final Four is on their own roll in East Conference play, as the Long Island Fury (4-0-0 WPSL East) stayed undefeated with two victories in the span of three days.

In that vein of thought, the league office has announced that the Fury’s U.S. U-17 star Vicki DiMartino (making her second appearance on the WPSL Team Of The Week) and Ohio Premier’s goalkeeper Lauren Robertson have been named WPSL Co-Players of the Week for the fourth edition of this award:

F Vicki DiMartino (LONG ISLAND FURY) - WPSL Co-Player of the Week
The Philadelphia defense again could not stop her, as DiMartino participated in all of the Fury goals in the 3-1 victory over the Liberty on June 11th, scoring two goals and an assist. In the past three wins, the future Boston College Eagle has now netted 5 goals and 2 assists after Long Island’s 3-2 victory at SoccerPlus CT on Monday night - scoring a goal and assisting on the game-winner over the Reds.

F Kiersten Dallstream (ARIZONA RUSH)
Only DiMartino’s performance could supplant the effort from the U.S. U-20 & Washington State University forward, as Dallstream scored two goals in Saturday’s 4-0 victory over Big Sky-North leader Salt Lake City Sparta and the 85th minute game-winner in Sunday’s 1-0 win over the same side for the 2008 WPSL National Finalists.

F Tamara Kochen (MIAMI KICKERS F.C.)
The veteran Miami Kickers F.C. and Florida International forward scored the game-winner in an important 1-0 victory on June 14th - assisted by 2008 All-Conference defender Rochelle Willis - over Palm Beach United for the undefeated 3-0-0 Sunshine Conference leaders.

MF Mary-Frances Monroe (BOSTON AZTEC)
The defending 2008 WPSL East Player of the Year has been scoring for her new team as well this season, as the undefeated Boston Aztecs (5-0-0 WPSL East) stayed that way with four goals from Monroe in a win over Maine on June 13th.

MF Mandy Moraca (PHILADELPHIA LIBERTY)
Moraca makes her second appearance on the WPSL TOTW, as she has been everything for the Liberty this season, scoring both goals in the 2-1 home win over SoccerPlus CT on June 13th. The 6 goals in 4 matches for the former North Carolina star now make her one of the top scorers in the WPSL.

MF Kelly Henderson (LONG ISLAND FURY)
The 2006 WPSL Final Four MVP assisted on DiMartino’s first goal in the win over Philadelphia and did the same in the victory over SoccerPlus CT last night. The B.C. standout has been a force throughout the midfield - offensively and defensively - for Fury Head Coach Paul Riley this season.

MF Melanie De Salvo (SD UNITED)
The Cal State-Dominguez Hills midfielder was a firecracker all weekend for the undefeated 6-0-1 Pacific-South Division leaders in wins over the Claremont Stars on June 13th and PSSCV-The Rooks on June 14th.

MF/D Kelsey Mitchell (FLORIDA SURGE)
The hard-working & creative midfielder was "everywhere" for the 2-1-1 Sunshine Conference side in their 2-0 home win over Puerto Rico on June 13th, keeping Florida in the race for a post-season spot.

D Analisa Marquez (ARIZONA RUSH)
The 2008 All-WPSL Final Four selection earned her captain’s band in two impressive shut-out wins over current Big Sky-North leaders SLC Sparta. The University of Arizona center back was instrumental in creating the counter-attack which lead to the game-winning goal in the 85th minute in Sunday’s 1-0 win.

D Ro Hernandez (SAN FRANCISCO NIGHTHAWKS)
The former WPSL National Champion medal-winner led the Nighthawks defense in a 2-2 draw with Portland and a 4-0 win over Seattle on the road, adding a goal on a penalty kick and an assist over the weekend for the 3-1-1 Pacific-North leaders.

GK Lauren "Taz" Robertson (OHIO PREMIER WOMEN’S S.C.) - WPSL Co-Player of the Week
The defending Midwest Goalkeeper of the Year recorded two shut-out wins for OPWSC this past weekend, as the Ohio State University stopper made some spectacular saves in road wins over the Chicago United Breeze and F.C. Twente3.

HONORABLE MENTION: GK Katie Ladd (SAN FRANCISCO NIGHTHAWKS) - only two important road wins for Robertson in the Midwest could knock Ladd’s play in the Pacific-North off the starting side, as her 18 saves had the Rain & Synergy frustrated in a draw and win, respectively; GK Tiffany Apple (SD UNITED) - the Mesa College stopper knocked a crucial shot in the 83rd minute over the crossbar, sealing SD United’s 1-0 road win at Claremont; MF Laura Kurash (MILLBURN MAGIC) - Kurash played a huge part in Millburn’s come-from-behind 3-1 win over previously undefeated Adirondack in East action on June 10th, being described as "the game-changer" by Lynx Head Coach P.J. Motsiff; F Nicole Wilcox (PORTLAND RAIN F.C.) - the former SEC Player of the Year scored 2 goals against San Francisco in Portland’s draw on June 13th; F Denisse Soltero (PUERTO RICO CAPITALS F.C.) - the leading scorer for PRCFC (4 goals) had a tally in a 2-2 draw vs. F.C. Thomasville in Sunshine Conference play on June 10th, but notched two goals in the team’s 4-1 win the next day over FCT to give Puerto Rico their first win of 2009.
